The Myth

The Ohio players, a funk band in the mid 1970s, was considered one of the top bands of their time. This particular myth revolves around the song “Love Rollercoaster”. At the starting part of the song, there is a shrill and sharp scream of a womanlike voice. Ohio players is a band of male singers so when a woman’s voice is being added in seems to be accidental instead of deliberate.  Thus, many speculations regarding to source of the scream started.

The first version of the story states that when the recording is made,a woman is murdered by an intruder just next door of the studio or in the studio itself. The identity of the woman varies from the girlfriend of a band member and the cleaning woman.

Another version states that the scream is actually from the model of the album as shown below.

Honey Picture

Honey Picture

What happens is that the “honey” used is not actually honey at all, but some liquid plastic that somehow adheres to the skin, which when removed, peels the skin off. Obviously someone screwed up. The scream is from the model whose skin is forcefully peeled of as a result. Another version of the same story states that the model, who is harmed by the liquid plastic, threaten to sue. Then the manger(or somebody) stabs her right then at the studio, causing the scream to be recorded in as an accident.

The third version of the rumor is more normal. The scream is taken from a 911 call or a psychiatric helpline call in.

The Truth

Who better to bust a rumor than a band member? Quoted from Jimmy “Diamond” Williams, he said: “There is a part of the song where there is a breakdown. It’s guitars and it’s right before the second verse and Billy Beck does one of those inhaling-type screeches that Millie Rippleton did to reach her high note or Mariah Carey does to go to octaves above. The DJ made this crack and it swept the country. People were asking us, ‘Did you kill this chick in the studio?’ We took a vow of silence because that makes you buy more records.”

Here is a video on this rumor. The scream is from 2:01 to 2:04.

Last Words

In my opinion, the fact that the band hid this truth for selling more records may not be that honorable. They should at least clarify it ages ago.

The myth

By creating a bogus email address at the first contact of your address book, you can prevent the spread of any virus or worms that are in your system from spreading to your contacts. The bogus contact will have no email address on it so that if the virus decides to “send all”, it will encounter an error form your PC about how the message cannot be sent, hence containing the virus. Also, the failure to send that particular message will be traceable in your inbox, so you can remove the virus!

The truth

This method may be applicable a long time ago, when the internet just started, since then viruses are not so smart. However, with powerful malicious virus that can cripple even software giants like Yahoo! and Mircosoft, it is evident that this measure of just creating a bogus entry ain’t going to be able to stop the virus. Most virus do not mail themselves all in one message but may “choose” contacts to send themselves. They may skip over that first entry causing this precaution to be worthless. This randomised choosing of addresses may also be from other residue files that may be in your system but not in your address book. Examples are read email messages and HTML files stored.

Moreover, even if the virus had been curbed from spreading through the creation of the bogus entry, the fact that it is still in the victim’s computer poses another threat. The user may accidently execute a file that has the virus code in it and then the virus quietly destroy the system files. Just deleting the virus carrying email found out by this method is insufficient to combat the dangers of the virus.

Last Words

The best way to combat virus and worms is still the use of a good and reputable antivirus/antispyware program. There are many available and even if you don’t want to spend money, there are free antivirus for download over the net. Some of the better ones are AVG antivirus, Clam antivirus (open source), Spybot-Search and Destroy and Spyware blaster.  Disclaimer: In no way is this author related to the above mentioned products and software. These are just personal recommendations that I make for those who are looking for good softwares.

The Myth

Many people reportedly to have beaten breath analyser tests by eating breath mints, which somehow managed to foil attempts by the police to catch drink drivers. There are actually many variations to this story. Some people profess sucking on a copper coin helps since it leave a copper alloy residue in your mouth that confuses the machine. So is this true or not?

The Truth

Firstly, we need to know how the breath analyser gadget works. For those who never saw a breath analyser before, here it is.

Breath Analyser

Breath Analyser

A breath analyser contains a mouthpiece, a tube where you blow air in and a sample chamber where the air goes. It uses a chemical reaction involving alcohol that produces a color change and the degree of the color change is directly related to the level of alcohol in the expelled air. The breath sample is bubbled in one vial through a mixture of sulfuric acid, potassium dichromate, silver nitrate and water. The sulphuric acid removes the alcohol from the air and then the alcohol reacts with potassium dichromate to produce:

  • chromium sulfate
  • potassium sulfate
  • acetic acid
  • water

For those of you who don’t understand the mumbo jumbo chemical reactions above, don’t be intimidated. Basically, the breath analyser shows up colors if you consume alcohol.

Sucking on a copper coin does not work because the copper coating of the coin does not affect the amount of alcohol content in your breath. The copper residue is not so strong that it will screw the machine up to thinking that there is no alcohol content in your breath. In the United States, coins are actually made of zinc (up to 97%) and then coated with copper. With only 3% copper, how can one reasonably think that this can help them to escape the long arms of law?

As for breath mints, they sure help to mask the smell of your breath. However, they do not remove the alcohol that is already present. In a nutshell, what this means is that although the police cannot smell it, the machine can still detect it, as it does not work on smell.

As for why this myth of breath mints perpetuate to this day, there may be several reasons. One is that people often have the idea that the smell of booze is the chief indicator of booze intake. Another reason is that there may be negligent cops that simply judge things on face value. In fact, this misconception is so widespread that in 1997, a British company tried to cash in on this, by introducing a breath mint that is advertised to be able to beat breath analyser test.

Last words

In my opinion, drink drivers ought to be punished. Not only they are endangering other people’s lives, they are toying with their own. Please, for anyone reads this, do not drink and drive, for the sake of yourself, those who loved you and those who you love. Take care of yourselves.
